Journal #8

Curits, Diane. "A '"Fantastic Super" Use of Technology: Closing the Digital Divide." Edutopia. 1 Nov 2002. The George Lucas Educational Foundation. 7 Nov 2008 .

This article tells us how the digital divide is closing in some schools around the United States. Mary Scroggs Elementary School in North Carolina received a grant from BellSouth, a major communications corporation, so that technology might be taught to students in order to broaden their educational base. Many teachers and parents alike enjoy using less paper, and more creativity from the students when blogging online together and sharing the days events. The school was created with technology in mind and also created a professional workspace for educators. Teachers who teach here seem as if they are more relaxed and less pressured with testing, even though their students are coming out on top. One teacher mentioned that she liked how teachers had the professional workspace in order to collaborate with each other and receive mentoring from more experienced teachers.

1. How might less-advantaged schools get the same chance that these schools are receiving?

If I were a teacher at a school with no technology available, I would probably start with the basics. Seeing as how children wouldn't have the hands on experience they need to fully express their knowledge, trips to the local library would be necessary. After having several tutorials and showing that the students are competent and enjoying learning technology I would ask to write large corporations. Hopefully they would invest money in the future of our children.

2. What type of techonology would be most appropriate for elementary school children?

Email, and blogging might be a little out of reach for children this young, but creating presentations with digital photography and the Animoto program would prove to be interesting. Creating a class Wiki is also something that they and their parents at home could also participate in.
